Roll Up Your Sleeves & Get Involved!

Starting out with Tableau?  Finding the confidence to get more involved?  Want to land a new job and think you could benefit from building your community network?  These are all great reasons to get involved in the Tableau Community!

Leisha Morrison  (a fabulous local Sydney recruiter) asked for my help this week – “How does someone get involved with the Tableau Community?”.   Voila!  Here’s my tips, and I’d welcome your comments to add more ideas!

Get Involved.
There are many ways to contribute, learn and build your profile!

Use Twitter. Create yourself a profile, add “Tableau ______” in your profile and start to search:
* Lists created by Tableau for Ambassadors, Zen Masters, Bloggers etc
* A great list curated by David Pires of Tableau and Data Viz tweeters
* Tweets with #Tableau / @tableau
* Follow people/lists you find interesting
* Tweet!  Share your own work, ask questions, be brave!  People in our community love to talk to new people, and help out!

Set up a Tableau Public profile, and publish (non-sensitive) vizzes and share your results on twitter.  Be sure to ask for feedback, and be brave!  There’s no need to feel nervous about sharing your work & seeking feedback. Also, try practicing with data sets you find interesting. Tableau Public is a great way to build a portfolio, I regularly check it out for people who apply for jobs in my team. {Thanks to Sarah Bartlett for the great ideas to include on this point!}

Do #MakeoverMonday:  it’s a weekly challenge set by Andy Kriebel and Eva Murray. They find published vizzes and the data sets, then it’s over to you to rebuild the visualisation with your own vision on what’s interesting.  You publish your work to Tableau Public, and then share on data.world and twitter, and get feedback too!

Do #WorkoutWednesday: it’s a weekly challenge set by Luke Stanke, Rody Zakovich, and Ann Jackson.  You’re given a Tableau viz, a data set, and a bunch of rules that can’t be broken.  Once you’ve finished you publish up to Tableau Public and send out a tweet.

Sign up to the Tableau Community Forums. You can ask questions about your trickiest Tableau questions and someone in the community will help you resolve.  The flipside is when you can give back!  Help someone else out and answer their questions.  I love a recent post by Kai, he sets aside time for his team to help people and answer questions on the forum while they are at work – nothing like lending a hand.
